Remember Red Green? Also known as Canadian comedian Steve Smith. And his sidekick Rick Green (Adventures With Bill). If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Or...keep your stick on the ice. Funny stuff. I guess you had to be there.

On May 31, 2011, I was walking my dog in Shear Park, where there’s a memorial to those who died in the 1985 Barrie tornado, near the corner of Innisfil Street and Baldwin Lane. A man walked down from St. John Vianney Church, slowly making his way to the memorial, just before 5 p.m., carrying a bouquet of flowers. Nicely dressed, if not formally, he laid the flowers right in front of the memorial. He didn’t linger, and I didn’t interrupt him. …

Is it just me, or do other Barrie drivers have trouble seeing around corners in this city? Some of it’s the weird road configurations of particular intersections; the roads just aren’t lined up to make seeing other drivers easy. At Innisfil and Adelaide streets, near Shear Park, is one example. Other locations are bad in the winter because of snowbanks, some were bad after the ice storm because there were so many branches out at curbs for …

Here’s my Canadian perspective of the Stanley Cup playoffs. We all need to cheer for Edmonton Oilers. Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames didn’t make the playoffs, Winnipeg Jets finished first overall in the NHL, lost to Dallas Stars. Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators made the playoffs, lost to Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs lost to Florida Panthers, who are up 3 games to 1 against Carolina Hurricanes. Same place …

Last weekend my daughter and I took my grandson to buy him a new bike. He will be 3 soon and growing boys need new bikes, from one summer to the next. He took about 6 for test drives, but couldn't decide on one because of nearby distractions - toy trucks of all sizes, colourful balls, dinosaurs, etc. He kept driving right into them! Do you think the store put the toys beside the bikes on purpose? We are making a second trip there.

I'm not really angry with Toronto Maple Leafs. I'm sure they tried in game 7 against Florida Panthers. But these Leafs, as constructed, are not Stanley Cup contenders. Time for some big changes in personnel. You can't lose like that and expect to stay together.

So my Toronto Maple Leafs were a no-show for game 5 against Florida on Wednesday, losing 6-1, and if the Panthers win Friday the Leafs will be golfing on Saturday. How does each season fold out the same way? Must be the climate in southern Ontario. Or maybe it's all the Ottawa fans lamely cheering for Toronto, since the Sens got to work on their golf games early this season, thanks to the Leafs.

So I told you about my tennis partner who slipped and sprawled at the Shear Park courts, last September. She was sore from the fall, as the surface is asphalt. But she really didn't complain, so I should give her credit. And she reminded me of this last time we talked on the phone. I will never hear the end of it if I take a tumble.

A couple stood up from their seats in the Council Chambers at Barrie City Hall and walked to its upper doors, the man dismissively tossing his agenda on the little table. They left, looking disappointed. There was no sign of city councillors, scheduled to meet at 7 p.m., but late. Whatever discussion or decision the couple had come to hear was not the priority at this May 7 meeting, which eventually started at 8:15 p.m., reportedly due to …

A sure sign of spring is tennis nets going up across Barrie. Now if I can just keep my partners from wiping out and injuring themselves, I might be able to play into August. The last one slipped and sprawled at the Shear Park courts.

Just when winter and freezing rain season is in the rear-view mirror, we get thunderstorm and tornado seasons.
Good thing I have a basement. Now let's see if I have enough sense to go down there if things get bad.

That so many Canadians voted at the advance polls, ahead of the April 28 federal election, says something. Maybe that they've seen and heard enough to know who gets their vote. Maybe they don't want to face lineups on election day, although there were long ones at some advance polls. Or maybe, with a federal election hot on the heels of a provincial vote, they just want to get it over with.

The Easter egg hunt always reminds me of when my kids were little, and my daughter got up early Sunday, before her little brother was awake, and hunted down all the barely hidden Easter eggs. I've rarely seen a boy so sad when he got up - his sister with all of the eggs. Of course we made her put all the eggs back, had the hunt and my son got his share of Easter eggs. But you have to give her points, just for nerve.

You know whose fault this weather is? A friend of mine started talking about getting their snow tires off. You even talk about this in April and it snows. Never mind the code in hockey, there's one for snow tires too. And this friend of mine should have known better.

Saturday is Record Store Day. Deals on vinyl, special album releases, vintage discs. Reminds me of going to TO to shop at (Yes This Is) Sam the Record Man or to the Barrie store at the Five Points, which fire claimed. Those were the days - shopping for music, not the fire.

It's never a good sign when you look out the window and see it snowing sideways, especially on April 8. There's more of that white stuff on the ground too.
And you wait, as soon as the NHL playoffs begin it will be sunny and warm.

Is that really sunshine out there? And there's no bitter cold! But I'm not fooled. The big green winter coat stays by the front door, the snow boots too. April usually has a surprise or two.

Now that power has been restored to most of Barrie, did you have any unusual or fun ways to pass the time without electricity? How did you stay entertained? Especially if you have kids!!

We've been hearing some chatter about food spoilage in the community due to the power outages. How have people been affected and tried to salvage what frozen goods they can?
